Academic Seminar on Shenzhen's Social Work Held in China Women's University

In the evening of Dec. 5th, 2016, the academic lecture with the subject of ‘Shenzhen’s social work development model analysis’ was successfully held in the 6th conference room by School of International Education. The lecture was hosted by Li Ying, head of School of International Education, and participated by students of Mofcom Foreign Aid Degree Program, professional master and bachelor of Social Work.

The aim of the lecture is to equip the students with in-depth knowledge on social work from perspective of regional practice and theoretical application. With the support from the University level, we are honored to have invited Professor Yi Songguo to give the lecture in China Women’s University.

Professor Yi introduced Shenzhen’s social work practice as a regional case study. He reviewed Shenzhen’s 10-year social work practice, and described the present situation of Shenzhen’s social work, including the industry associations, the social work service organizations, social workers, relevant projects, community service centers, etc..

Professor Yi also introduced a social work development model as a theoretical perspective. He first talked about the concept and the framework, and then explained in detail three models, including the government led and society operated course model; the diversified, professionalized and specialized service model; as well as the constitutionalized and systematized management model. His theoretical conclusion together with the case of Shenzhen’s practice gave the students a chance to have in-depth thinking on social work development model.

Many students actively participated in the Q & A session. A lot of discussions took place on social worker’s position, development path and so on. The discussions hit the spark of thoughts, and drew the curtain of the lecture.

Professor Yi Songguo is a PhD on social work, who graduated from University of Hong Kong. He is the dean of department of Sociology in Shenzhen University, deputy chair of Guangdong association of Social workers, and deputy Chair of Shenzhen association of social workers.

The lecture of Shenzhen’s social work development model analysis helped students broaden their views and gave them further understanding on the relevant research field. The students also felt that they benefited a lot from it, and expressed their interest in participating in more similar lectures and seminars.
